Expected Project Results

The SmartPhone Vision project (“Empowering Vision: AI and Haptic Technologies for People with Visual Impairments” — Grant Agreement: 2026-1-EL01-KA210-ADU-000468609) produces practical, transferable, and open-access results designed to enhance digital literacy, spatial orientation, and independent living for visually impaired adults.

Over the 24-month lifecycle of the initiative, the project delivers the following key tangible and intangible outcomes:

Project Result 1: SmartPhoneVision Mobile Application & AI Core

  • Real-Time Obstacle Detection Engine: A lightweight, optimized computer-vision system powered by machine learning architectures running locally on mobile devices to detect everyday obstacles and key navigation targets.
  • Distance & Spatial Estimation System: Integrated algorithms capable of assessing object proximities and environmental spatial layouts without requiring expensive external sensors.
  • Open-Source Repository: Full public release of the codebase and technical documentation on GitHub under permissive open licensing for continuous global adaptation and research.

Project Result 2: Standardized Multi-modal Vibration & Audio Code

  • Haptic Communication Vocabulary: A structured tactile language converting real-time visual surroundings into distinctive vibration pulses and frequencies directly felt on hand-held smartphones.
  • Multi-modal Sensory Integration: Seamless pairing of haptic vibrations with auditory cues to provide comprehensive spatial awareness while preventing cognitive or sensory overload.
  • Validated Accessibility Protocols: Technical design verified through participatory co-design sessions and usability testing directly involving individuals with visual disabilities.

Project Result 3: “Haptic-Vision” Multi-modal Educational Toolkit

  • Comprehensive Learning Curriculum: Modular training units covering practical smartphone usage, AI-assisted orientation, and tactile feedback interpretation.
  • Multi-Format Accessibility: Availability of all educational materials across digital editable documents, screen-reader friendly formats, audio guides, and Braille-ready versions.
  • Trainers’ Handbook: A practical instructional guide designed for adult educators, mobility specialists, and community assistants supporting inclusive adult learning.

Project Result 4: Validated Pilot Programs & Field Evaluation

  • Direct Community Training: Many visually impaired adult learners trained through structured local workshop sessions in Greece and Romania.
  • User Experience & Impact Evaluation Report: Systematic analysis of pilot training data, user feedback loops, and comparative pre/post mobility autonomy indicators.
  • Refined Accessibility Guidelines: Practical recommendations to assist educational institutions and developers in creating accessible AI solutions.

Project Result 5: European Dissemination & Sustainability Network

  • Multiplier Events & Knowledge Sharing: Concluding dissemination conferences held in Thessaloniki and Bucharest, engaging disability rights associations, educators, and policy representatives.
  • Erasmus+ Platform Integration: Archival of all deliverables, training guides, and open resources on the official Erasmus+ Project Results Platform.
  • Long-Term Exploitation Strategy: Sustainable integration of project outcomes into local adult education structures and community support programs.
