Project Objectives & Strategic Vision

The SmartPhone Vision project (“Empowering Vision: AI and Haptic Technologies for People with Visual Impairments” — Grant Agreement: 2026-1-EL01-KA210-ADU-000468609) addresses the critical need for digital inclusion, autonomy, and accessible continuous learning for adults with visual disabilities across Europe.

By combining modern Artificial Intelligence (Computer Vision) with intuitive Haptic feedback mechanisms, the project creates practical, everyday mobility and orientation solutions directly accessible via mainstream mobile devices.

Core Objectives

1. Advance Accessible Digital Literacy & Everyday Autonomy

  • Bridge the digital divide by enabling visually impaired adults to independently interact with public environments, spatial surroundings, and online digital services.
  • Foster self-reliance and confidence in navigating daily personal, professional, and civic activities using affordable smartphone devices.

2. Co-Design Intelligent Vision-to-Touch Technology

  • Adapt real-time machine learning algorithms for low-latency obstacle identification, object recognition, and distance estimation.
  • Translate complex visual environmental data into an intuitive, standardized vocabulary of vibration patterns (Haptic Feedback) paired with audio signals.
  • Actively engage target end-users throughout the design and optimization phases to guarantee true accessibility and ease of adoption.

3. Build Multi-modal Pedagogical Frameworks & Training Capacity

  • Develop the comprehensive “Haptic-Vision” Educational Toolkit, providing structured modules, manuals, and exercises in multiple accessible formats (Digital, Audio, and Braille).
  • Upskill adult educators, mobility instructors, and community trainers with specialized competencies to teach accessible assistive technologies effectively.

4. Promote Open-Access Innovation & Scalable Social Inclusion

  • Publish all software components as open-source code on public repositories, ensuring that technological achievements remain freely available for continuous community development.
  • Align project outputs with the European Union’s Digital Education Action Plan (2021–2027) and horizontal priorities for Social Inclusion and Equal Opportunities.

Key Project Targets & Expected Impact

  • 100+ Adult Learners Directly Trained: Hands-on training and validation workshops engaging visually impaired adults across Greece and Romania.
  • Standardized Multi-modal Methodology: A field-tested curriculum supporting inclusive adult education providers and disability support organizations.
  • Freely Distributed Solutions: Fully open-access digital toolkits and mobile applications accessible to end-users without licensing barriers.
  • Transnational Knowledge Transfer: Establishing shared methodologies, accessibility protocols, and long-term cooperation across borders.
